I'm sure all of us have seen at least one episode of Secret Life, but if you haven't here's a little brief synopsis: Good Girl, Amy Jergens gets swept off her feet at band camp (how ironic) by Self-proclaimed Bad Boy Ricky, whom she loses her virginity too. Long story short she gets pregnant, big surprise, and ends up keeping her child. Of course there's other drama that goes along with the series but you catch my drift. Shows like these often glamorize teen pregnancy. It almost makes you believe that situations like Amy's could actually happen to you. When it's far from the truth. Your not gonna have all of your family and friends supporting you, and your not always going to finish your education as you planned, all while having a hot steamy romance on side. It's just not realistic, and shows like these really send the wrong message. Teen pregnancy is anything but glamorous, and I admire young mothers who go through these hard times on a regular basis. Because I don't know about you, but I couldn't. It's about time, the media comes out with a show or a movie (other than Teen Mom) that doesn't have actresses with perfectly painted faces and bodies, and gorgeous boyfriends on the side. Because life is anything but perfect, and there are girls out there whose true stories need to be told.

I am actually one of the few who hasn't seen Secret Life, however, I've heard of it and what it is about. I completely agree with Jennifer in that the media should stop glamorizing teen pregnancy. It is everything but easy and glamorous.
ReplyDeleteI believe, though, a show displaying the true hardship of teen motherhood would not be very successful. I know that I would not find it entertaining to watch a young couple struggle, adapt to a new life, and raise a child without being fully fit.

I have not seen the show Secret Life as well but as also heard of the show. I agree that the media is portraying that teen pregnancy is okay. For instance on the show 90210 one of the character's got pregnant but right after her pregnancy she had fame and a lot of money. We all know that in reality that is very unlikely to happen. I know shows such as 16 and Pregnant tries to show their audience that being a teen pregnant is not where it is at but at the same time teens could take the show into their own perspective and say they know that the father of their child would stick around. Or even as someone mentioned in the discussion Friday that there was a research shown the some girls are trying to get pregnant just to be on the show and receive fame. I really believe a sexual ed requirement class is High School would help to show that being a teen and pregnant is not glamorous.

Glamorizing pregnancy to me is like glamorizing eating or breathing. and im defintly a fan of sex ed classes. I just feel like parents and mothers in particular need to sit their daughters and sons down and tell it to them as it is. my mom has told me enough information to know that pregnancy before 20 is a big no no, because she was a teen mom as well.

I am a fan of the show and however I do feel that glamorizing teen pregnancy is not a good thing to do, for those of you in the previous comments, your not fans of the show, you don't really know what happens in the show. Yeah Amy gets pregnant, but Amy was tricked by a guy who tricks people into having sex with him because he was sexually abused as a child. Amy's character does have the baby, and she does keep the baby, but Amy learns a lot more about responsibility and learns more about herself. If you watch the show, you can see that Amy really loves her son, and her life changed because of him. Sure she got pregnant by accident, but throughout the show her character gets a new judgment and learns to love stronger for the sake of her son. I feel the point of the show, is that yes, not every pregnant teenage girl is lucky enough to have a supporting family and friends and be able to keep her education. But it also says, to do whatever you can to AVOID teen pregnancy. To talk to your parents, etc. Otherwise the show is a good show and Ive watched it since it first aired on television
